Body-Safe Materials: A Practical Guide to What Your Product Is Actually Made Of
Most product listings describe material in three words, and two of them are usually marketing. “Medical-grade”, “premium”, “skin-safe” — none of these are regulated terms on a consumer listing, and none of them tell you what the object in the box is made of.
The material matters for three practical reasons: what it may release into contact with skin, how long it stays intact, and whether you can clean it properly. This guide covers the four material families you will actually encounter, in the order you are most likely to meet them.
Silicone
Silicone is a synthetic polymer built on a silicon–oxygen backbone. For body-contact products, the relevant distinction is between platinum-cure silicone and the cheaper tin-cure or peroxide-cure variants.
- Platinum-cure silicone is chemically stable, odourless, non-porous, and holds its shape. It does not contain plasticisers, because it does not need them to stay flexible. Inert and effectively non-reactive, it does not support bacterial growth on its surface the way a porous material does.
- Tin-cure silicone is cheaper and can carry a faint smell, particularly when new. Quality varies far more widely than the platinum-cure category.
What to look for: the word “platinum” in the material description, or a shore hardness figure (for example “shore 10A”). A brand that has paid for platinum cure usually mentions it.
How to clean: warm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap, then air dry completely before storage. Silicone tolerates boiling water, but check the manufacturer’s instruction first — some products combine silicone with an electronics module that will not.
One caveat that catches people out: silicone and silicone-based lubricants are a poor combination. Silicone oil can degrade a silicone surface over repeated contact. Water-based lubricant is the safe pairing.
TPE and TPR
Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) and thermoplastic rubber (TPR) are the most common materials in lower-priced products, and the ones most often mislabelled as silicone. They are soft, inexpensive and pleasant in the hand.
They are also porous at a microscopic level. That porosity is the whole problem. It means:
- they can harbour bacteria in the surface structure, not just on it;
- they absorb lubricant, and over time can discolour;
- they degrade faster, becoming tacky or developing a smell.
How to clean: warm water and mild soap immediately after use, dried thoroughly, then stored with a light dusting of cornstarch or a dedicated renewing powder to stop the surface becoming tacky. TPE should be treated as a consumable — plan on replacing it, and inspect it for surface changes.
What to avoid in TPE: look for the term “phthalate-free” or a stated compliance with an EU or US phthalate restriction. Phthalates are plasticisers used to soften some plastics; several are restricted in consumer goods in the EU and are the main reason an unfamiliar cheap TPE product is worth a second look at the label.
Hard plastics: ABS, PC and PP
Rigid plastic components — handles, housings, caps, battery compartments — are usually ABS or polypropylene (PP). These are not porous in the same way as TPE and they clean easily. They are perfectly appropriate as structural parts, and a product that keeps them clearly separate from body-contact surfaces is usually better designed.
How to clean: warm soapy water. Avoid solvent-based cleaners and acetone, which dull and can craze the surface.
Glass and metal
Borosilicate glass is the material with the fewest compromises: non-porous, chemically inert, tolerates boiling, and does not react with any common lubricant. It requires care in handling, and it should be inspected for chips before each use — a chip is a reason to stop using it, not to smooth it down.
Stainless steel, usually 316 or 304 grade, is likewise durable and non-porous. Look for the grade stated explicitly. Where metal is used as a coating over another material, any breach in the coating exposes the layer underneath.
A quick decision path
- Is the material stated at all? If a listing will not name the material, treat that as the answer.
- Is it platinum-cure silicone, glass or 316 stainless steel? Then you are in the lowest-maintenance category, and thorough cleaning with mild soap is sufficient.
- Is it TPE or TPR? Then expect a shorter service life, clean it immediately every time, store it dry and powdered, and replace it when the surface changes.
- Does it smell strongly out of the box? A persistent chemical odour is not a good sign regardless of what the label claims.
What we are not going to tell you
We are not going to give you a list of approved brands, because the same factory supplies many labels and formulations change without notice. What travels better than a brand name is a habit: read the material line on the listing, keep the original packaging for the care instructions, and inspect what you own periodically.
